  Japanese Car of the Year in 1994, the FTO is a combination of Mitsubishi technical wizardry with genuinely radical styling. This front wheel drive sports coupe was an instant hit when it first appeared in the UK, courtesy of independent importers, just over 8 years ago. Available in 1.8 16 valve or 2.0 V6  24 valve forms, the GR has the 180bhp engine and the GPX utilises the Mivec version of the V6, producing 200bhp.

The FTO comes with either tiptronic transmission or the more rare 5 speed manual gearbox. The tiptronic version has proved to be very popular, offering the usual advantages of 2 pedals, but with a very clever manual override it also appeals to the more enthusiastic driver. 1997-on tiptronic models have the improved 5 speed version.
