One of the most popular marques with independent importers, the Toyota sports car
range covers both normally aspirated and turbocharged versions. The MR2 with it's
mini-Ferrari looks and mid engine layout is a viable alternative to a fwd hot hatch if you
can live with just two seats. With up to 170bhp in normally aspirated form and something
like 220 bhp in turbo guise, the MR2 certainly goes as well as it looks. Incidentally, the
MR2 turbo, for some reason was never imported officially into the UK by Toyota GB and is
therefore only available as an import.
The Celica, in our opinion, is vastly under-rated offering excellent
performance and superbly predictable handling at a very sensible price. If you are looking
for a stylish but practical 2+2, then check out the ST202 Celica (93 onwards). Even the
earlier 90-93 model shape has aged well and some still prefer the looks of the early
cabrio to the later version. Don't forget the GT4 version, which offers at least
225bhp of turbocharged performance coupled with four wheel drive. The very latest shape
1.8 VVTi 140bhp or VVTi-L 190bhp models and 6 speed gearboxes continue the Celica
tradition of marrying contemporary styling with more than adequate performance and very
competent handling.
Toyota reliability is well documented and from our experience they are virtually
unburstable.
