the fto and the mot ..

fto gpx
Please note that this is not intended to be a detailed analysis of the MOT test, but more a list of potential problems areas specific to the FTO, and what you can do to minimise the inconvenience and expense of your car failing the annual test. The following information is based on over 30 years in the motor trade and 10 years experience with FTOs. This advice should help you make a more informed decision regarding parts purchase and may also be useful for any DIY'ers out there.

exhaust system
In comparison with other topics, the MOT requirements relating to the exhaust system are pretty straightforward.

In a nutshell, the whole system from front to back which consists of downpipes, catalytic converter, centre pipe and rear silencer, needs to be complete and in sound condition.

All mounting and support brackets should also be complete and effective .

Minor corrosion of the system is not a failure item, nor are minor leaks. It should be noted however that exhaust system leaks can affect engine performance and economy and can cause MOT emissions test failure.

Substantial corrosion with a risk of failure, significant leaks and clearly excessive noise could all constitute an MOT fail.
